Whether you are a fan of formula one or not, and regardless of any specific issues that people want to pick with the style of the film, I think most people will leave this film inspired by the person that he was and how he lived his life.
I have never been interested in F1, so his death passed me by without touching me in any way. I am glad I had the opportunity to learn of him and register his passing as a loss worth mourning.
With respect, I completely disagree with filmchild's review. I am not a formula one fan, in fact I detest it - it’s just not my bag. I don't mind knowing who won but it takes far too long to reach a conclusion (again, just my opinion).
However, I really enjoyed Senna, the racing was never dull as they didn't show too much of each race and the drama of the thing was intense from the backstage politics which appeared to really upset Senna and the rivalry with fellow drivers - there was just too much going on to get bored and the pace was excellent. I can understand the bitterness Prost must have felt - when someone shows up with such natural talent as to make it all look easy, most people would be infuriated too.
As for picture quality - well, the footage is old - I mean, you have to accept its not HD - if that is a main concern of yours and you can't ignore it for the sake of a really interesting story... perhaps Pirates of the Caribbean is more your style.
I'd thoroughly recommend it, so sad, so life affirming - we all live, we all die but not many of us could say that 20 years after we died, 12 million children would have been educated by our legacy now can we?
For Formula Ones fans only. Tedious beyond belief. And documentaries belong on TV not at the cinema. This is perfectly fine on Channel 4 at 9pm on a Tuesday, but if you pay to watch it you are being conned (as was I and it's the last time I pay to see a documentary). Cruddy non-Hi Def footage is fine on the TV but looks ugly blown up on a big screen. The lack of talking heads does work and the film tells the story coherently. This story, however, is spectacularly dull.
Senna himself is a total charisma vacuum and it's pitiful to see a grown man happy to compete, plastered in so much advertising. (This film was brought to you by the decidedly dodgy likes of Shell and Marlboro and Rothmans etc.) After about an hour of it (yes, I was looking at my watch quite a bit) I couldn't wait for him to crash and die so the film would end. Five stars? You are having a laugh. But to be fair, you Matthew are not the only critic to inexplicably drool over the film.
Don't believe the hype.
