There are two films in here struggling to get out: one is a sensitive portrait of a confused elderly old widow, in which the fact that she is Baroness Thatcher is almost irrelevant; the other is a shallow and simplistic romp through the era of an insufferable leader who did great damage to her country (although you wouldn't know this from the film). Putting the two together was a misguided enterprise. I admired Meryl Streep's and Olivia Colman's performances, but not much else.
Don't listen to the critics. This movie is great - go see. There are a few very unhistorical moments, such as Thatcher witnessing the death of Airey Neave, for example, but all writers have to take some dramatic licence. Don't watch King Lear if you want to know some English history. I think the critics have really missed the point with this film. This movie will tell you next to nothing about Britain during the 'reign' of Thatcher. It is a study, and a very personal study at that, of one woman's descent into madness and dementia. Meryl Streep is truly breath-taking (as usual). My politics are left wing but I she made me feel total sympathy towards a character that usually invokes hatred. Now that is acting. Jim Broadbent is also excellent as Denis Thatcher. For me the scene that stole the show was the cabinet meeting just before Howe's resignation where Thatcher really did lose the plot. It is comic and utterly terrifying by equal measure. A razor-sharp study of leadership and what it means to be a powerful woman in a world more accustomed to being led by men. And she finally does end her days 'washing teacups'...Subtle and under-stated screenplay writing of the highest calibre. An Oscar awaits...
I had to see this film simply because of the person. I grew up in a country that was ravaged by her policies for most and enriched for the few at the top. I wanted to see if this reality was reflected in the film.
Well, if you are looking for closure, sadly neither side will get it from
this film. It's a bad balancing act even though no ball is dropped. There's nothing to get your teeth in to, nothing to love or hate, it's totally lacking in passion. In my opinion, a waste of time. I wanted to hate it because of the subject, but I couldn't even do that simply due to it's lack of anything interesting. I would call this a very disappointing film. Flat in every aspect.
The review is spot on -- what a shame that the film leaves you feeling at the end "Was that it?"
