The Bath House may not be as famous as the nearby Eagle but it's still a great pub with a quiet simplicity that makes it popular for a casual pint.

The Venue
As you step off Benet Street into the Bath House, you are met with nothing that surprises you, just a simple practical pub with a more cleaned-up look than the battered traditional types.

The large space is open plan, with lots of dark wooden tables and chairs making the most of the room, and a wooden-panelled bar at the back.

The cream walls with a few sections of yellow and blue with pale green pillars are basic neutral tones that keep the pub looking clean and fresh but not too fussy.

The darkness and character of the old pub has gone, so the aim of this version of the Bath House is to keep things simple, practical and comfortable for their customers. Some of the fruit machines are still in place reminding customers of an older time.

The People
The Bath House has nothing spectacular on offer, it's just a basic pub minus the traditional features. This can make it very appealing for customers who want a casual drink but not in the dingy atmosphere that sometimes plagues old-fashioned pubs.

Instead, the ambience here is casual and friendly but also light and airy to relax drinkers even more. However, the large space does sometimes suck all the buzz out of the place as it's difficult to fill.

This is a pub suited to laidback students or quiet, older drinkers who enjoy the peace, rather than pub goers who want banter and liveliness.

The Drink
Prices for the pints are reasonable considering the central location, and with favourites such as Old Speckled Hen for £2.50 and Greene King IPA for £2.85 the locals don’t tend to complain.

Stella, Heineken, Guinness and Strongbow are also available on tap for £2.80 upwards, and there's a basic spirits list with all the usual brands of vodka, etc for £2.20 for 25ml. The wine list offered is limited but affordable, with bottles from £10.

The Last Word
This pub may not be bursting with charm, but for a free and easy get together with friends, the Bath House is a dependable bet.
