The ViewCambridge Review
A cool hang out for Cambridge’s sophisticated crowd that has a delicious menu and a great selection of drinks.
The Venue
Situated on the corner on the leafy green residential street of Humberstone, Fleur De Lys is a flash of modern sophistication in such a quaint quiet area. Not far from the city centre, the sign stands out among the suburban houses.
Once inside, the contemporary decor definitely impresses. The monochrome palette, polished wooden floors, steel bar, dark wood furniture and white, grey and pale green walls create the epitome of understated chic.
The separation of the bar and the bistro leads to a different vibe in each. The bar has comfy leather stools and more sociable seating arrangements.
The outside area is wonderfully secluded and the combination of simple decking and lush plants creates a beautiful space. Everything is tastefully decorated and the attention to detail is good, ensuring everything has a chic sheen.
The People
The sophistication of Fleur De Lys doesn't make it posh or stuffy. On the contrary, it creates a trendy bar with an informal feel. The crowd is mostly young professionals and older classy types who appreciate the calm yet hip ambience.
A few students looking for a more elegant bar also venture inside, and due to the slight distance from the heart of the centre there are no tourists. The demeanour of the customers is smart yet friendly, and both the bar and bistro feel intimate and dynamic in the right balance.
The Food
The menu consists of British classics with a hint of global influence and a modern twist which adds flair as well as flavour. Starters cost around £5 and are a good selection of light seafood or vegetable dishes.
An interesting choice is the meze, where you can build your own sharing plate of tasty nibbles to suit your craving, be it tzatzizi or olives.
For mains, the average price is around £10, and there is an interesting mix of simple classics like sausage and mash or macaroni cheese made with delicious local ingredients. Or there's more restaurant-style food such as tenderloin of pork.
Presentation is very good and the quality is great for a bistro and many customers find themselves eating here even if they didn’t plan to.
The Drink
To appeal to the chic drinker there's a good cocktail list covering all the classics like Bloody Mary and Margarita for £4.95 each. Shooters are also popular and keep the night alive for £3 with heady alcoholic combinations.
The wine list has a good selection of more high-end bottles than you’re usual pub, with prices going from £12 to £20, giving customers a decent choice of quality and type.
Beers on tap include Fosters, Kronenbourg, San Miguel, Carlsberg, Strongbow and Guinness for around £3, and the choice of basic and premium spirits for £2.50 to £4 a measure keeps any spirit expert pleased.
The Last Word
Fleur De Lys is a chic place offering the best of both worlds. It's a dependable bistro and an elegant bar, giving locals every excuse to try this place.
