The ViewCambridge Review
A lively and popular historic pub with good, affordable food.
The Venue
The Green Dragon is a cosy old pub in Chesterton beside the river and the bridge to Stourbridge common. Pictures of Chesterton from the early 1900s cover the walls and there are some lovely old beams and a fireplace.
It has a cosy atmosphere and a very local feel, although all are welcome. And although there are TV screens which show the football, it's retained its traditional village pub vibe.
There are two outside areas. One is a small heated area with a couple of picnic tables, and the other is just across the road. This large stretch of grass goes all the way down to the river.
Sitting in the garden you can watch the swans and ducks and the river go by. On a hot day it's a good idea to bring a rug to sit on in case it's busy and the benches are full. There is also a popular quiz on Tuesday evenings during university term time.
The People
On usual weekday evenings you'll find mostly older locals, but when the sun is out at the weekend, or when a football match is on, it becomes packed - partly with locals and partly with people from far and wide.
There are some students but they're the minority and this place is very rarely empty. On a sunny day the atmosphere is very relaxed but when the football is on it can be a little rowdy.
The Food
You can get an excellent ploughmans baguette here for £3.95. It is jam-packed full of cheese, fresh salad and comes with a really tasty IPA chutney. The chips are very good, they're golden and cost just £1.95.
The rest of the menu is made up of simiarly traditional pub grub such as burgers, fish and chips and lasagne and prices go from £6 to £8.
The Drink
This is a Greene King pub and so it sells Greene King beers. They have six hand-pulls and two of these are guest ales. Lagers cover the usual range of Continental favourites such as Becks, Carling, Stella, Fosters and 1664.
For an ale like Abbot or IPA you're looking at around £2.60 to £2.80 a pint. You can have Pimms and lemonade but don’t expect any fruit.
The Last word
A great affordable pub for a lunch by the river in the summer or a cosy drink and meal by the fireplace in the winter.
