Henry’s is your average modern bar. But its enviable location ensures plenty of locals stop by for a drink as they watch the punting chaos on the River Cam.
The Venue
In the midst of tourists taking pictures, punt guides drumming up trade, and families enjoying the pretty river sits Henry's. It's a simple bar with not much more to offer than its location.
Outside, the river does its job nicely and sets a pretty scene for customers. Inside, the decor is modern and sleek, but not particularly imaginative.
Bold patterned wallpaper, understated light fixtures and flourishes of over the top decadence, such as large pillars, create a commonly repeated pattern of chic bar decor. However, the bad print carpet brings it down a notch.
Henry's is spacious, with lots of variation - from dark, moody nooks to bright, refreshing views. There is, at least, something here to suit all moods.
The People
Henry’s is a bit too dull for the under 25s, so there are very few students milling around. In fact, the students stick to punting. It's the families on a day out by the river, or tourists enjoying the sights, who try out Henry’s because of its practical location.
The simple tranquillity of the river combined with the fun chaos around it can inject lots of life into Henry’s. However, when it's busy the wait at the bar can be a long one, which quickly gets people’s stress levels up.
The Food and Drink
As it's a bar, not just a pub, Henry’s offers cocktails as well as the usual choices of wine and beers. Cocktail categories cover martinis, long drinks and shorts, all for £5.50. Some concoctions are made with premium spirits to make them taste extra special.
The wine list is veering towards expensive, with an average bottle coming in at £17. Again, prices aren't exactly cheap when it comes to the food. Simple ham, eggs and chips comes in at £8.95.
Other options include burgers for £8.45, leek and blue cheese risotto for £8.95, chilli sauteed king scallops with linguine for £10.75 and sausage and mash for £8.95.
They also do a Sunday roast and sharers, and an all-day breakfast which costs £7.95. In an attempt to lure in students they do pizza at £1 a slice on Thursdays, as well as drink offers.
The Last Word
Henry’s relies heavily on its location to make it stand out from other bars in the area, but the Quayside does add a touch of magic which makes your cocktail all the more enjoyable.
