The ViewCambridge Review
To feel like you’re having a drink in your own living room The Panton Arms is just the place for you.
The Venue
Off Hills Road in the residential area of Panton Street sits the Panton Arms, its green brick exterior standing out against the identical houses surrounding it.
With a nice courtyard outside for al fresco drinking, you step inside to find two doors.
The one on your right leads to the main bar which has lots of simple wooden furniture, stripped wooden floors and large windows to let some light in. The long bar in this room is a stark contrast to the next room.
The door on your left leads you to what looks like a student living room, but without the mess. A handful of large tables face a giant projector screen, and there is a worn striped blue and white sofa that is ridiculously comfy.
So what do you do when you want a drink? The bar in the other room cleverly leads to a gap in the wall of the living room area, perfect for poking your head through and ordering a drink.
The People
The Panton Arms attracts a mix of students and older locals, everyone wanting to relax with a pint without wandering into the city centre.
The students tend to take over the living room area, all of them lounging around getting comfortable and chatting to each other which creates a friendly, lively atmosphere.
In the other room the customers are older and more laidback, preferring a peaceful drink to wind down their evening.
The staff are amiable and seem to know a lot of the regulars, nodding with a familiar smile, so you’ll soon feel welcomed and at home here.
However, without the customers, the Panton Arms doesn't have enough character to be interesting so avoid at off peak times.
The Drink
For around £2.90 a pint you can enjoy Abbots Ale, Reverend James Ale as well as Guinness, Stella and Fosters.
The wine list is basic but affordable with a mostly New World range. The average price for a bottle is between £10 and £13.
The Last Word
The Panton Arms offers a great place to socialise while making you feel like you’re at home, but with more drinks and a bigger TV.
