The ViewCambridge Review
Allegedly the oldest pub in Cambridge, the Pickerel Inn has lots of traditional character, a good selection of real ales and a surprising crowd.
The Venue
Tucked away on Magdalene Street, the Pickerel Inn is an unassuming pub with a quaint, duck-egg blue exterior. Inside, the low ceilings, mass of wooden beams and panelling everywhere prove this is an authentic old-fashioned pub.
With lots of nooks and crannies to hide away in, plus a modest yet charming character, the Pickerel Inn is ideal for the classic pub lover who likes a boozer to have well-worn charm.
On the wall, official pictures of various former students of the nearby Magdalene College add a sense of familiarity, and gives a historic feel which highlights the fact this pub has been part of the Cambridge community for a while now.
The People
Though this seems like the ideal old man's pub, complete with peaceful areas to enjoy your pint and a rough around the edges look, the Pickerel Inn is in fact relatively popular with students.
Of course, it's not the party hard types who want to get legless on cocktails, but the more laidback casual types, usually from Magdalene college, who want a friendly pint with friends after lectures.
There are still the standard old men types who take full advantage of this pub, and a few tourists who want a genuine glimpse into the world of British pubs, so everyone feels welcome.
The atmosphere is understated and the hum around the room never really gets loud or lively, just moderately peaceful.
The Food and Drink
For real-ale drinkers this pub is a treat, offering usually eight ales including a few regularly changing guest ales.
Classics like Woodpeckers and Adnam’s are always reliable for flavour and quality, plus Nelson’s Revenge for something a little stronger to perk up your evening.
All pints are under £3, and if you’re looking for something more summery they have a small selection of cocktails, such as a pitcher of Pimms for £12 and simple cocktails for £2.50.
A basic menu covering all the usual favourites is on offer, with everything from burgers for around £6 to £7, to lasagne, sausage and mash, caesar salad and pie of the day. Most mains are around £7.50.
The Last Word
For a quiet drink in a truly dependable British pub, the Pickerel Inn is a favourite with old men and students alike.
