The ViewCambridge Review
With cheap beer on tap, and walls covered in pictures of trains, The Locomotive suits those who want a swift pint in an unfussy atmosphere.
The Venue
Located on Mill Road, this pub’s faded blue sign and dark windows don’t give much away. But step inside and you'll find a spacious bar, a pool table and a friendly face manning the ale pumps.
The pub has taken its ‘locomotive’ theme to heart. Drawings and photos of various locomotives cover every inch of the wall. Cue joke about trainspotters. But seriously, even though it's a bit weird it is charming.
Blue panelling and upholstery is the only (dull) colour in the decor and it contrasts with the wooden tables and chairs.
The Locomotive has an old-fashioned, worn-out, comfortable look about it, just like a good boozer should be.
The People
During certain times of the day there isn't much to look at, apart from all the trains. However, once work is over and the evening draws near, the locals wander in looking for their favourite cheap pint and a laidback chat with mates.
It might not always be lively, but the characters that use The Locomotive as a regular haunt are an interesting lot, and they're friendly and welcoming. It's also got a few secluded areas for those who prefer a quiet drink.
The Drink
Not many places can claim to sell pints for around £2, but The Locomotive does just that, making it popular with regular pub goers who want to save the pennies.
Fosters, Carling, Stella and all the usual pub favourites are on tap, plus Adnam’s Bitter and Fuller’s Pride for £2.85 to please the real-ale drinkers.
The wine and spirits list is basic and not particular sought after here, but it's still cheap for around £10 a bottle of wine and £2 to £3 a measure.
The Last Word
It may not be as thrilling as an actual locomotive, but this pub has a simple relaxing quality and serves some of the cheapest pints in town.
