This is cooking that aims for the stars - Michelin stars. The chef has moved from the only other starred restaurant in Cambridge and clearly wants his own.

Many of the dishes have a least one rouge ingredient, for instance my first course of hare and red cabbage came with a white chocolate and vanilla foam. Did it work? Absolutely.

The dishes are not only pushing the limits of the culinary arts, but they look like works of art. Roast Halibut with, leek, black olive and muscat grapes was arranged with an elegance to match the superbly matched ingredients - though not ones I would of thought of putting together myself.

My companion's Slow roast sirloin with a fricassee of snails and girolles with shin beef was hardly less stylish and perhaps even more exciting when it came to flavours.Deserts were spectacular.

Peanut parfait, caramelised popcorn and black cherry looked good enough to hang on the wall and tasted even better but the Smoked milk jam mousse with caramel, honeycomb and banana was awesome.

The mouse came in a kilner jar full of smoke and the smokey flavours were locked into the mouse as well - hugely impressive. This is food that is demands attention like a bored 6 year old and it will get it I am certain.#

It is expensive, the location is terrible, the outside of the building is uninspiring and inside is a little ott. You could even walk away after 3 courses feeling a little peckish, but if you want state of the art cooking don't miss this place.

We moved to Cambridge just over a year ago and after many overpriced and unsatisfactory meals in the area, we were delighted to find Alimentum Restaurant.

With live music on Saturday nights and live Jazz nights on Tuesdays, great food, amazing customer service, we have been back time and time again, and have never been disappointed.

We visited Alimentum again on Saturday night and it amazes every time we go.

The atmosphere is like nothing else in Cambridge, grown up and sophisticated but friendly and attentive. The food excels itself each time we go.

We had just returned from a visit to the States but the steak we had at Alimentum exceeded anything we had there.

We keep going back because the menu is so inventive and exciting with seasonal input - if you want a real treat to to Alimentum

As a frequent traveller, I have reason to eat in many "fine" dining establishments throughout the year and really very few ever prompt me to write reviews.

Alimentum is an expectation to that. It is an exception because it was such a truly memorable experience.

Memorable from the the moment I walked through the door and took in the delightfully tasteful, modern, yet welcoming ambiance and decor of the place.

A pretty modern shell of a building has been internally transformed into a chic, impressive and still somehow understated surround. The welcome from the staff was extremely professional, polite and attentive whilst not being overly forced.

This set the scene for the service throughout the remainder of my stay.

Onto the fare - well, I can honestly say that I have to trawl my memory banks to recall a better prepared and thought through culinary experience.

I had had a salmon and crab starter which was sublime in both taste and texture and my partner had breast and tongue of lamb with anchovy which looked amazing and apparently tasted even better.

For mains I enjoyed a most exquisitely prepared sirloin and my partner the fillet and belly of pork. Both looked sensational on the plate the taste explosion was bordering on the surreal. The many oohs and aahs that accompanied our meal made me somewhat self conscious in the end but such was the level of enjoyment they were truly difficulty to suppress.

My wife thought that the chocolate bavarois she enjoyed for her dessert was the crowning glory and my cheese board was diverse, interesting and full of fantastic flavours. I don't pretend to be anything of a wine expert personally but the wine list was certainly broad and the sommelier recommended a wonderfully cheeky little number that complemented perfectly.

All in all, we left feeling incredibly lucky to have found such a rare combination of elegance, modernity, style a

We visited Alimentum for a friend’s birthday on one of their jazz evenings last week.

We were all particularly impressed with the food - my partner relished his duck parfait, and my risotto; creamy, mild and filling was a stroke of brilliance.

My sea bream fillet was exactly as it should be - crisp, fresh and melt in the mouth. We were seduced by the eccles cakes for pudding which were a real treat; flaky pastry encasing a rich, gooey inside.

Delicious!Jazz may not be to everyone’s taste but it makes a great focal point for the evening and as a bit of a 'jazz cynic' (visiting with some real jazz followers!) I was really pleasantly surprised.

It was definitely something I'd go back too and is a great evening to visit with a group of friends. Service was friendly and helpful without being overbearing.

Having recently moved to Cambridge and dined in many of its restaurants only to be disappointed, how pleased I was to discover the little gem that is Alimentum!

In a town that seems to have somewhat of a void when it comes to dining, this place is a refreshing example of dining on a par with many of the top restaurants in London (it's almost as though some one has picked it up from the city and moved it to Cambridge!)

My partner and I went on a Saturday night and were made to feel welcome from the moment the door was opened for us, right until the very end.

The food was superb and detailed, the wine list interesting and broad, and the service was the best I have seen in town!

There was also a young pianist playing beautifully, I understand he is there every Saturday so we may be returning just to have some of the lovely cocktails they offer and to listen to the music.

I wouldn't say that it was cheap, but you get what you pay for, a bill of 110 (before service) for 3 courses, aperitifs and a bottle of wine was more than reasonable and certainly better value than any where else I have eaten in the area. We'll be back!

I have dined at Alimentum on several occasion's over the last year and have only ever experienced excellent service, food prepared and cooked to standards beyond their 3 AA Rosette rating and enjoyed both jazz evenings and regular dinner sittings.

The room is contemporary, stylish and has a class feel - a little bit of New York in Cambridge.

If you want to spend comparable money on homogeneous rubbish in a chain restaurant with dumb waiters, go ahead.

My money is hard earned and well spent in quality establishments offering an outstanding dining experience.

Keep up the good work folks!

First visit to this "fine dining" restaurant last night...Will not be going back..

..Overpriced food. Pompous staff. The owner of the place actually asked on a microphone for his restaurant diners to keep the noise down so his bar guests could hear the awful Jazz musicians!!

As a frequent diner in nice restaurants I have never been so amazed and disgusted in my life. I was shocked to hear the proprietor telling his restaurant diners that we were not respecting the musicians!!

He was incredibly arrogant and rude. The music was so loud you couldn't hear yourself think but we were the ones who were told to be quiet!

Unbelievable. The starter was the best bit about the mealThe main course was flavorless and the Fondant I had for desert was overcooked

Not a good place to go and I seriously would advise people to stay away. Our bill topped £700 for 13 of us, so I would of thought that if we wanted to talk amongst ourselves during our diner, that would be allowed...

... Not in this place

I agree with these comments...I go to a restaurant with friends for conversation and to enjoy good food. The food didn't disappoint but the piping of live music into the dining areas meant that conversation was impossible. Keep the music in the bar area and the matter will be solved - Report
