A charming restaurant in the centre of Saffron Walden, a short walk from the main car park by the green, China China is a haven from the world. The exterior belies the charm of the interior. You step into a calm and peaceful environment; egg shell blue walls, real plants everywhere, freshly laundered table linen and Chinese silk paintings of birds on the walls sit in soft lighting. Chinese string music plays gently in the background without ever being intrusive and the hosts give you a warm and sincere welcome. I could not understand why, on a Thursday evening, we were the only people in the restaurant. We chose the £13 a head set menu and ordered a pot of green tea as well as soft drinks. The pot of green tea was a generous size and graciously refilled when necessary. Our set menu gave us starters of spare ribs in a tasty sauce and the main course was 4 dishes:- a king prawn dish, a crispy sweet & sour beef dish, rice and a vegetable dish. It was beautifully presented and as delicious as it looked. The portions were generous - not often that my daughter and I are defeated but last night we were! The service was faultless - the proprietors genuinely want to please.

On Sundays apparently, they have an eat-as-much-as-you-like menu for £11 a head for adults, and £6 a head for children.

I recommend you to try the restaurant out - it's good value for money and well worth the trip into Saffron Walden. My only comment is that it would be worth them having their own website designed in this day and age - I can only conclude that the empty restaurant was due to people not knowiing about them!
