I have visited The Curry Garden many times since moving to Cambridge in 2006. My experiences can be summarised very easily with one word: variable. I'll summarise a few visits here:my first meal (jan 2007) was as part of a large group (~18), and service was understandably a little turgid. Being a non-drinker my only objection was having to order my glass of water no fewer than four times(!) before it finally arrived - one hour after I first requested it. The food on that occasion was very tasty - portion sizes were reasonable, so no problems there.
One year ago (dec 2008) I visited with friends (group of 8) and the service was markedly better. After ordering, our meal was with us within half an hour. The chicken shashlik was delicious, with at least 10 large chunks of succulent chicken. The brinjal bhaji (my favourite) was fantastic, almost 90% aubergine. Very satisfying, aside from the obviously microwaved poppadoms.
The most recent visit was last Saturday (6/2/2010). Again, the service was very good - the food arrived quickly and was very tasty. But the portion size was a terrible let down - my chicken shashlik had shrunk to 6 small chunks of chicken (hidden between a whole tomato and half of a large onion), and the brinjal bhaji was <40% aubergine, the rest being (again) onion. I realise that there is a recession, but I think that economising is going a little far here? Despite ordering (and consuming) chicken shashlik, plain rice, nan, brinjal bhaji and poppadoms I actually left the restaurant feeling very hungry (and promptly went home for toast)! I noticed before Christmas that the portion sizes were getting a little bit mean, in particular the rice, and last weekend's visit only served to confirm this. Such a shame to be so penny-pinching. Curry Garden The is therefre recommended for very thin people who like a tasty curry but don't have much of an appetite. I, unlike Arnie, will not be back.
