A pub with plenty of character and lots of history, The Eagle has managed to stay on the tip of local tongues for many, many years.

The Venue
With parts of the pub dating back to 1600, this is certainly a pub with a past. Having been refurbished in the 1980s, it has still retained some of its traditional features, including a low ceiling, two wooden panelled bars, exposed brick walls and slightly worn furniture. And a bad print carpet.

The walls seem like a collage of random beer mats, RAF-themed drawings and photos, and pretty much anything else the owners felt like putting up.

The plane theme is interesting to look at, especially the modern ceiling which is covered with etchings of messages from Second World War soldiers.

The outside cobbled courtyard is a lovely place to sit in the summer and draws in locals and tourists alike.

The People
It's been a favourite haunt for some rather famous people. Watson and Crick apparently walked in one lunchtime to announce they'd discovered the secret of life after working out the structure of DNA. As a result it's now a regular on the tourist trail.

In the daytimes it’s quite quiet, with only a handful of locals having a peaceful drink and excited tourists analysing a typical British pub.

In the evenings it can get quite busy however, with everyone from old men to students enjoying a pint here. The atmosphere is always laidback and friendly, but at the wrong times the place lacks life.

The Food and Drink
Being an old-fashioned pub, you’d expect the Eagle to serve a decent pint of real ale, which it does. Old Speckled Hen, Abbot’s Ale and Greene King IPA are all available for around £2.90 a pint, with the usual lagers like Carling, Fosters, Guinness, Becks and Stella also on tap.

There is a basic range of spirits which are only £2.40 for a shot, plus a global and reasonable range of wine for £12.45 to £18.95 a bottle.

During the day you can pick from pub favourites including fish and chips, steak and ale pie, bangers and mash and cannelloni.

In the evening it gets a bit posher, with mains meals such as rump steak, sirloin steak, Greek salad or a goats cheese salad. Mains go from £8 to £10. They are introducing a new menu soon, so watch this space.

The Last Word
With some pleasant features and a friendly crowd, The Eagle is a pub with a reputation that will never dim.
