The Fountain Inn doesn't have a distinct character or any interesting details, instead it relies heavily on atmosphere to make it sparkle.

The Venue
As the Fountain Inn is on Regent Street it gets quite a few passers-by peering through the blurry windows to glimpse what’s going on inside. All they see is a warm glow so they might pop in to give it a try.

Inside, the decor has been kept very plain, with simple cream walls and basic wooden furniture with a few flashes of faded colour here and there.

There's no old-fashioned character but there's nothing modern either and the inn seems to be stuck in nothingness which can make it seem dull.

The People
The people who enjoy a pint at the Fountain Inn vary from laidback students who aren’t too fussed where they go, to the typical old men who enjoy somewhere relaxing for a quiet drink.

The spacious feel of the pub and the friendly staff create a welcoming feel as you enter. However, there isn’t much excitement in the place so, while it's perfect for a peaceful drink and a leisurely chat with friends, it's a nightmare if you want more stimulation.

On Friday and Saturday they have live DJs, and they show the major sports events, which liven things up a bit. The late licence can make it popular with drinkers who aren’t yet ready to go home, but during the day the Fountain Inn seems rather dull and dead.

The Food
If you love pie and mash this is the pub for you. Their menu is almost exclusively pie-based and their interesting range is supplied by the award-winning pie producer Pieminister.

There's the minty lamb pie for £7.95 or, for the same price, you can get the matador pie which is filled with free-range British beef and chorizo.

Vegetarians are also catered for as there is a wild mushroom and asparagus pie or the Heidi pie, which is filled with goats cheese, sweet potato, spinach, red onion and roasted garlic. Each costs £7.65.

They also do a selection of sandwiches for around £5, and homemade soup and chunky chips and dips for around £3.

The Drink
The choice of beers is reasonable and it costs around £2 to £3 a pint. There's Hoegarden, San Miguel, Amstel and Guinness. The wine list also gives a decent selection from around the globe, with bottles priced from £12 to £20.

They have a healthy cocktail list made up of classics and original mixes, all priced at £4.95. There's the Cactus Milk - a mix of tequila, Kahula and milk or the Cuban Berry, which is Havana Especial, strawberry liqueur, pineapple juice, vanilla syrup and cava. There's also a few shooters for £3.95.

The prices are fair but not particularly cheap so this isn't really the place to go for a bargain drink.

The Last Word
An uncomplicated pub with a varied crowd and a mediocre drinks selection, neither of which can lift the Fountain Inn from average to something more.
