Claiming to be ‘famous throughout the world’, Tatties specialises in serving baked potatoes with every filling imaginable.

The Venue
It's unlikely Tatties is famous throughout the world. The cafe itself seems very ordinary but it’s the amusing confidence they have that pleases locals.

The spacious well-lit interior is simply decorated with basic wooden tables and functional chairs, but the walls have a few retro advertisements that are a nice touch.

Blackboards display the many, many choices of fillings plus various other goodies, and there’s a canteen-style counter where customers help themselves to a tray and pick up their order. The courtyard in Sussex Street is a lovely cobbled area perfect for watching people wander by.

The People
Due to the low prices the place is very popular with students looking to fill up with some tasty food without busting their budget.

The atmosphere is very easy going, with young customers happily chatting and enjoying their food, or friends catching up over a coffee.

Tatties straightforward decor lends itself to a laidback ambience where students feel comfortable coming in looking rough from the night before and stressed mothers can have a break from family shopping without fuss or hassle.

The Food
Known for baking potatoes since 1981, Tatties have developed it into an art – or at least perfected the simple task of using good quality potatoes, baking them fresh and serving them hot with lots of filling.

The choice of fillings is tremendous, with classics like Heinz baked beans and cheese, the staple of any student diet, to prawns in tomato and garlic for something with a more interesting flavour.

Prices range from £3.15 to £6.95, and portions are generous so you can easily fill up. There are also lots of sandwiches and a few daily hot specials for similar prices if you don’t fancy a classic potato, even though they are nutritious and tasty.

The Drink
All drinks are under £3 which already makes them worth ordering. Pure, freshly ground filter coffee plus other caffeine variations are available including refreshing iced coffees for summer, or organic coffee and tea. The usual list of soft drinks is served and there are fruit smoothies for a handy, tasty vitamin fix.

The Last Word
It many not be famous but Tatties is a great place to get a hearty, healthy lunch without depleting your bank balance.
