The Venue
The Bakers is a glimmer of contemporary style among the drab greyness of East Road. The decor is chic yet understated and informal.

It's split into three sections and the area you enter first is made up of seductive dark red tones, comfy leather booths and large seating areas big enough for groups of friends to slouch down and get relaxed.

From this stylish zone you walk into the conservatory area which has a much more refreshing feel. Neutral green, cream and brown creates a light and airy atmosphere with a more natural gloss to it.

Light flows inside and beckons you towards the decked outdoor area, which is not only spacious but peaceful enough for drinkers to fully appreciate a hot summer’s day.

The People
The customers of The Bakers are a carefree, friendly bunch, with a touch of innate cool.

In the conservatory area couples and friends leisurely eat lunch, ponder over conversations or while away a Sunday afternoon reading the paper in peace.

In the more sophisticated area they lounge during the day but create a lively buzz during the evening as they congregate around the large booths with their drinks.

The Food
The Bakers has a touch of the gastropub about it. Typical British classics are covered, with a few modern European influences thrown into the mix.

The food is fresh and appetising, with mains such as homemade beef burgers (£6.95), beer battered fish and chips (£6.95), penne and four cheese pasta (£6.95) and starters and desserts around £5.

Nibbles and sharers include cheesy nachos for £4.95. The menu isn’t too basic or on the other hand too fussy, just appetising dishes that appeal to the locals.

The Drink
Beers and ales are around £3 a pint, with a typical selection of lagers such as John Smiths and Fosters and a few real ales like Old Speckled Hen.

The wine list has a decent selection of mostly good quality New World wines ranging from £11.50 to £19 a bottle.

The coffees served are also popular as this place is regularly used by local shoppers as a cafe break, with everything under £2.

The Last Word
